iOocLlwer Oil.)
Dbbckiption, — Oleum Morrhuaa, or Cod-Hvcr oil, is oljtained from the liver of the Gadus Morrhua and otlier species of the Gadus. The livers of the Cod are put into a large vessel and heated by ateani applied to the out- side. The liquid is drained off, allowed to stand, and the oil is finally Bkimmcd off as it rises to the top. The finest brands of oil are prepared by forcing currents of steam at high pressure through the mass of livers, tearing them in this way to pieces and melting out theii' oil.
The oil should be pezfectlylimpid, yellow, thick, and free from rancidity, and possessing the peculiaj' flshy taste.
The brov»i and black oils are rancid, nauseous, disgusting, audunfit foi administration.
Cod-liver oil is a very complex substance, containing, according to Dr. Jorgh, glycerine, oleic, magaric, butyric, and acetic acids; also iodine, bromine, phosphorvs, phosphoric acid. The iodine is In proportion of about OTie part in two thougiiTid; or, according to Dr. Jorgh, four-hundredths of a grain in one hundred grains of the oil.
Officinal Prepakations. — (1) The pure oil; (3) triturations of the oil; (3) linetaire. (Dr. Neidhard recommends a tinctnre made by digesting J i to S 1 of strong alcohol, and dilutions from this tincture.}
