(Blood^ool.)
Botanical Descmptioh. — Sanguinaria is a spring plant, found in Canada, and all parts of the United States, excepting aouthward to Florida and westward to Mexico and Oregon. It generally grows in rict lands, covered witli forests and shaded in summer, avoiding the sea coast and high mountains.
Tlie toot is perennial, horizontal, oblong, and, when green, nearly of the Icngtli of the finger, from one-fourth to one-half an inch in diameter, knotty, fleshy, with numerous radicles. Its prtemorse or abrupt form is occasioned by its making off-sets from its sides, wliich off-sets separate as the root decays. Its color, externally, is reddish-brown ; but internally it is paler. It ia succulent, and, when cut or broken, it emits, from, numerous points on the tranverae surface, a bright orange, or rather dark vermilllon colored juice, which has a bitterish, acrid, hut peculiar taate, which remains long in the mouth, and leaves a persistent burning in the throat.
The juice of the stein is Ijetween a red color and a yellow, aa that from the stem Of Chelidnnium majus is pure yellow, and that from Paparer is white.
The chemical analysis shows it to contain an alkaloid called San- guinarina. Dr. James SchieJ, of St. Louis, claims to have determined the identity of Sanguinarina with Cheirythrin, obtained from Celandine. It also contains chelidonic acid.
Officinal Pbbpabatiobb. — Tincture of the root, with strong alcohol; dilutions; tritnrations of the dried root, and of the Sulphate and Nitrate of Sanguinarina.
